Eyelid Surgery (also called Oculoplastic Surgery)is an important branch of Ophthalmic Surgery. It is the group of surgical techniques aiming:

  • Treatment of tumours of the eyelids and periocular area (basal cell carcinomas, melanomas)
  • Treatment dermatochalasis (droopy upper lids)
  • Treatment of lower dermatochalasis and festoons (lower eyelid bags)
  • Treatment of orbital fat prolapse of upper and lower eyelids
  • Treatment of xanthelasma and warts (papillomas)
  • Treatment of ectropium (everted eyelid)
  • Treatment of entropion (inverted eyelids)
  • Treatment of abnormal growth of eyelashes (trichiasis, distichiasis)
  • Treatment of facial spasms: Botulinum Toxin (Botox®)
  • Surgical reconstruction after accidents and injuries

Blepharoplasty: Eyelid Surgery for a more youthful appearance

Upper and sometimes lower eyelids may become droopy or baggy as part of the natural aging process. Eyebrows also may sag or droop as a part of the same process. The eyelid skin stretches, muscles weaken and fat pockets may become more prominent as they bulge. This may be a hereditary condition that runs in your family.

Cosmetically, such conditions may detract from the overall attractiveness of your eyes and face and cause a tired or older appearance.

Droopy eyelids are a major reason why some people consider eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to remove and tighten excess eyelid skin for a more alert, youthful appearance.

Blepharoplasty can remove excess skin, muscle and sometimes fat from the upper or lower eyelids.

Sometimes blepharoplasty may also your vision by enlarging the field of vision.

  • Because the eyelids are a very visible part of the face and any alteration adversely affects both functional and aesthetic aspects.
  • Because sun exposure and the fact that people are living longer, rises the risk of developing potentially cancerous lesions in the skin, especially affecting the face.
  • Because modern corrective techniques are highly effective, safe and painless.
  • Because early diagnosis and the use of lasers enable minimally invasive surgery with minimal risk of causing scars.

Because the oculoplastic surgeon is best prepared to address the problems of such a sensitive area as the periocular, preserving the ocular structures and minimizing potential complications.
